Canucks Win Presidents Trophy
No surprise Here. The Canucks had this thing on lockdown. Lets Celebrate it for the night and then move on from it. Canucks have to make sure that they keep their focus on going far in the playoffs, and got get caught up with the small celebrations on the way to Lord Stanley.
The Canucks/Kings Game got really out of hand tonight. The refs were letting a lot of things go early on and throughout the game, and it culminated in Kyle Clifford hitting Chris Tanev into the boards from behind. Clifford was frustrated because his team was down a goal and they couldn't muster a single shot in the entire third period. Clifford fucked over his team by taking a 5 minute major late in the game ensuring his team stood no chance of coming back. It was a really bad play on his part, especially because how dirty it was. Tanev was definitely concussed on the play and did not return to the game.
The other bad hit of the night was on Danel Sedin's second goal. At the same time as getting a shot to the head, Daniel Sedin scores a goal. Talk about taking the hit to make the play. Doughty was out of line and you don't make that kind of hit against a superstar in the league. He also should go for the puck and try and stop Daneil from shooting (Doughty played terrible tonight singlehandedly causing the Canucks first two goals). Doughty has to alter that hit so he takes Daneil's body and not his head. This is what the NHL is trying to get rid of. Of course the NHL won't make an example out of Doughty because they don't care about the safety of their players. That has become clear from the Bertuzzi hit the other day. Bertuzzi delivers the death blow
watch as bertuzzi nails johnson so hard that johnsons helmet disappears. bertuzzi will definitely be suspended on this play. it almost looks dirtier than the hit matt cooke delivered recently. Johnson stayed in the game which is good, not sure if he had to follow concussion protocol and go to the dressing room.

Story of the Game/Story of the Series
The canucks have been able to come out strong early in the game. we have gone up 3-0, 2-0, 3-0 in the first 3 games respectively. blackhawks don't look as strong as us early in the game. they can't skate with us. and when they start playing physical and trying to scare us we have been able to exploit it. if you look at the mason raymond goal, the first one of the game, two blackhaks were laying a hit on kesler beside the net, which left mason raymond wide open streaking in from the point to pop it home. chicago has some sloppy coverage when they try and play physical.
but the amazing thing about chicago is they are always able to break our defensive system. so many teams get turned aside and have to wait for a powerplay in order to get a chance on us. but chicago gets the puck deep and generates chances, even when they're losing 3-0. you've got to give them credit, and they're probably only going to get better as this series goes along.
if the blackhawks do win the stanley cup, they would have to give the conn smythe to bifugly. this guys is definitely their best player. did you see the tsn segment about him where they said he used to be 290 pounds before he lost weight? this guy is a tough goon, of the todd bertuzzi elite power forward school. bifugly is getting time on the top line. he drives to the net and screens luongo, and size wise there is no better player in the league to have as your screen. bifugly even scored a goal on luongo in that 6-3 blowout win. apparently he is getting to luongos head. it definitely looked like lou was frustrated in the loss on saturday. lou was trash talking bifugly in his post game interview, check it out:

How the Playoffs could Unfold
With Anaheim's win over san jose last night, they have nearly put the nails to the coffin of the Sharks tremendous year. Bobby Ryan has looked amazing in the playoffs so far. He has had 4 goals in 4 games, and has been playing tremendous on the line with Getzlaf and Perry. Getzlaf is the set up man and Bobby Ryan is the finisher.
I am really hoping for anaheim to win this series, because then canucks will have home ice advantage next round. if the ducks win, they will play detroit next round, while the canucks will play the winner of calgary/chicago.
The calgary chicago series is definitely the best series of the first round. the blackhawks definitely look like the favorite at this point for two reasons. 1) the blackhawks have home ice advantage for the final best of 3 series. 2) the flames roster is very depleted. i have been saying that this one will go to seven games for a while and i still believe it will. tsn injury update is saying that lang-con-bourque are all questionable for saturdays game.
having a lot of injuries this time of year is not bad luck. it is a sign that your players have been overworked and have not had enough time to rest. for the canucks past 3 years there have been massive injuries on their defensive core. i first thought that we were just unlucky, and that we had the curse of the jade groin. but it was really because we were asking our players to do too much. even while their groins were soar, we were asking them to play because its better to have an injured willie mitchell than a healthy ossi vanaanen.
the fact of the matter for the flames is that they have lost two of their best faceoff men in langkow and conroy. they have lost their best defenseman in regher. and they have lost their best secondary scorer in rene bourque, who has likely reinjured his ankle. while the chicago blackwhores have no injuries to contend with, although they probably have some sore players on the ice like patrick kane. if the flames can find a way to beat the blackhawks with this injury riddled team, then if they are able to get some of their injured players back in the second round, they will be a force to contend with. for now, iginla needs to keep on scoring, you need to keep getting secondary scoring from guys like nystrom, and phaneuf has to keep playing effective.
interesting note: todd bertuzzi is leading the team in plus/minus with a plus 4. he is tied with jordan leopold who i have not been very impressed with so far this series. leopold has already taken 4 minor penalties this playoffs.

A good night for hockey last night. when the canucks retired lindens jersey, all the canuck players came out on the ice for warmup wearing number 16 Lindern jerseys. Canucks went on to win 4-2. In edmontons last 2 games they have been outscored 13-4.
Gaborik tied the game in the third and then bert won it in overtime. Bertuzzi's breakaway goal reminded me of a majestic thoroughbred show jumping horse gliding through the air over the obstacle. The obstacle was of course a combination of lack of confidence due to a 17 game goaless droubt and nicklas backstrom in net. Bert chose the perfect time to end his scoring streak lifting his team over the wild in OT. Im not sure who sent the pass to Bert but it was an amazing chip. it was if he was using a sand wedge to lay the pass right on to Bert's stick.

Hey Hal, we should try getting tickets to the Flames Senators game on the 27th. you down if we get get some cheapies in the sport chek zone?

Bertuzzi
He had a great game again last night. He scored his fifth goal in his fifth game, still on pace for 82 goals this season.
He played with Iginla on the powerplay and it always looked deadly. Then he played with Conroy on the second line for much of the game. This line had a lot of pressure throughout the game, even though it did not score. Bertuzzi had good presence of mind, and was setting players up to put a lot of pressure on Edmonton.
The only complaint about Bertuzzi, would be that he is not being very physical. Every once in a while you see him line up for a big hit, but he usually lays off. Iginla has already been in 2 fights this season, but bert has not been in one.
Flames fans don't despair, you always start the season off really shitty. The fact that you've got Bert the superstar, and not Bert the Floater, means that you will have a great season.
check out this fight last night. the flames player looks like he got his ass kicked. but when you consider that Macintyre outweighs Prust by 75 pounds, then you realize that Prust did an amazing job. The hit by Macintyre is the best hit so far this season, and Prust had to stand up for his teamate who just got boulderized by Macintyre.

The Todd Bertuzzi Sweepstakes

Yet another moment that Brian Burke looks like a fool. Today it was announced that Todd Bertuzzi has been place on waivers so the ducks will not have to pay his 4 million dollars for the upcoming seasons. what teams could potentially be interested in this star?
Toronto-Typically Toronto would be the obvious choice. They are one of the few organizations that always seem to be willing to sign 'past-their-prime' players. However with recent buyouts to many mistakes from the past, Toronto has probably smartened up, and will not sign big bert.
Vancouver- If the canucks resign naslund, bringing bert back might be a good idea. You could reunite the pairing and make them a deadly second line to the Sedin's. You could also replace morrison with Kesler as their center, to make them more defensively sound (which has always been Big Bert's shortcoming).
Really though, the list of potential cities that bertuzzi could end up in is endless. Mike Keenan has already made a stupid trade for him once before. Wouldn't it be great if he urged sutter to sign the big bruiser?
