Earlier in the season there was no point in trading Bieksa. All the other GM's were unsure of his potential because of the injuries that have kept his game total and point total down. Also because of the videos on youtube of game six versus Chicago where Bieksa is laying on his ass for three of the chicago goals.
But now that he has been fluking out and playing good, other teams might be willing to pay a price to take him for a playoff run. Say another team in the league that needs a highpower defenceman and has extra forwards to spare.
A team that really needs defense is San Jose and they might be willing to depart with Devin Set-o-hands. Numerous possibilities abound. All Gillis has to do is make sure to sell at the right moment, when it actually seems to the other team that Bieksa might be useful. Unfortunately, if you blink, you can miss these opportunities.

Forget Trading Bieksa, lets trade Samuelson
Shit son, lets trade Samuelson. Its so simple. I hope theres a gm stupid enough to take his 2.5 million contract for the next year and a half.
From here forward we will refer to him as "samuel (shit) son". i think we might be able to get a second rounder for him. he did have 15 points in 12 games in the playoffs last year. he also dropped from the first line to the third line throughout this season finding his spot in alain vigneaults doghouse.

smitty to oilers and darryl sutter being fired
it will be interesting to see if steven tambelline, the gm of the oilers, takes the same hot tub time machine strategy that darryl sutter of the flames has taken. if the rumours are true that a smyth for souray deal is in the works, we could see both alberta teams trying to recreate a spark of beauty from the past.
word of advice to the oilers: don't.
in other news darryl sutters future replacement was hired today. ken king the owner of the flames hired as an assistant gm, the gm that led tampa to the finals but then was fired and replaced by stevie y. like all stupid owners that dont know whats best for their organization, ken king is slowly pushing darryl into a cushy upper management job and out of the cockpit of the flames. the new assistant gm should hope to be less of a japanese kamikaze pilot in his effort to build a stanley cup winner. expect darryl to be out of the gm role in the next offseason or two (the next time the flames do worse than making the second round of the playoffs.)

Lessons of Glen Sather: How to defy Mathematics
This is a very important post for canucks fans everywhere. with recent news that the neidermyer brothers are thinking of joining the canucks so they can be in the city for the 2010 olympics, we must understand the capology of the situation. my question that i will be asking is, will it be possible for the canucks to sign, the sedins, gaborik and the neidermyer brothers this off season?
currently the cap space is at 56 million. i know its the economic crisis, but i have a feeling the cap will increase again this year. lets assume that it goes up to 58 million. the canucks have 34 million allocated for next season on 15 players. usually you want around 23 players that means the canucks have 22 million to sign 8 players. the sedins, neidermyers and gaborik are 5 players. that leaves 3 other players on top of these to fill the void and lets assume we spend 2 million altogether on these 3 players. that leaves us with 20 million dollars to sign the big 5. is it possible?
slob neidermyer is currently making 2 million, but hes going to have to take a paycut if hes going to play in van. plus the only reason we want him is for his brother so he should understand that its only fair.
scott is currently making 6.75, so i think if he is signing a 1 year contract it would be good for him to take 7 million. we cant expect to pay him any less given the fact that we were willing to pay mats sundin 8.6 million for this season.
gaborik currently makes 6.3. i think he will fetch up to 8 million on the open market.
and the sedins will likely be available for 6 million each. the loss to chicago brings down their value because they have proven to be inconsistent playoff players throughout their history.
if we add that all up: 1+7+8+6+6=28
so unfortunately it does not look like i will be able to have my cake and eat it too. the canucks will likely have to skip out on gaborik, if they are going to land the brothers of sedin and neid's.
however, we could be like the flyers and bank on injuries in order to do well. everyone should know that gaborik and demitra will play 82 games, as a couple, 41 games each. they will likely both fake injuries to go on a gay cruise together at some point in the season. their injuruies (assuming they both only play half a season) would free up 6 million in cap space. all you would have to do is trade sami salo (3.5) for some draft picks and this situation will be doable. that would even leave 2 million dollars to spend on getting someone at the trade deadline.

The Teemu Selanne Sweepstakes
Montreal- Montreal has the cap space to sign a big name player. They were missing one ingredient this playoff run. Selanne has not played in Canada since his days with the Winnipeg Jets. Rumour has it that fellow Finn Saku Koivu is encouraging him to come to montreal.
Anaheim- Anaheim has no cap space to sign Selanne. Unless he is willing to take an extreme paycut or start playing after the trade deadline. It is unlikely he will return to anaheim.
St. Louis- The Blues have most of their significant players locked up and a lot of cap space. They could be looking to bring in another superstar. Kariya and Selanne played well in the past. It might it be worthwhile to reunite the pairing.
Retirement- Selanee is 38 years old and did consider retiring last season. Going back to finland and being taxed heavily on all his past salaries could be an option. My advice to Teemu: if you do retire, put your money in an offshore bank account; the Cayman Islands seems to work well for many.

What Shall Brian Burke Do?
Currently his team is sitting with a salary of 51 million dollars. He Still needs to sign Corey Perry. Does he let him walk as an RFA and accept compensation? Or do you trade away a player to free up cap space to sign perry? Given that the ducks have already lost McDonald, Bryzgalov and Penner, Burke will probably want to sign perry.
Teemu Selanne and Doug Weight are UFA's, and there will not be enough cap space to sign them. This will inspire future posts concerning their 'sweepstakes'.

Who is the best RFA for Canucks this Summer?... besides jeff carter
Edmonton Oilers enforcer Zack Stortini. He is a tough-looking guy that always seems to lose in fights. But put him in the right organiztion, where he can become a fan favourite, and maybe he'll start winning some bouts. He's got a lot of heart. I once saw him challenge the entire calgary flames team to a brawl. The canucks were able to give celebrity status to jeff cowan. Imagine what kind of attention Zack could draw?

The Marian Hossa Sweepstakes
With the Penguins playoff dreams now shattered, there are a lot of pens fans hoping for the return of Hossa next season. They claim that Hossa would be willing to take a pay cut in order to play with the pens again. I don't believe this. Hossa had an excellent playoffs, and his value has currently peaked. If he signs with the Pens at a discounted rate for one season, he becomes vulnerable to taking a paycut the next season. If Hossa has any sort of sensible agent, he will be looking to sign a contract similar to Chris Drury or Daniel Briere's last summer. He could easily make 56 million over the next 7 years. So where will he end up?
Pittsburgh could potentially resign him to a full and proper contract. This would mean having no room left to resign Malkin, but after Malkin's poor final round performance, maybe you don't need him anymore. You could trade Malkin away for a tonne of prospects, or you could just let him get signed as an RFA and get shit loads of compensation.
The canucks are one team that never get mentioned in the Marian Hossa sweepstakes... except on this blog. The Canucks currently have a new GM with loads of expectations on his shoulders. Dave Nonis was fired because he was unwilling to make a deal to bring a player to vancouver. He only made trades that were completely lopsided in vancouver's favour, such as the luongo trade. The new GM will have to do something drastic, unless he wants to suffer the same type of ridicule that Nonis endured from the Vancouver media. The Sedin's would play amazing with Hossa. They were able to give anson Carter 30 goals one season; imagine what they could do with Hossa. They are the deadliest set-up combination in the game, they just need somebody that can finish the damn play.
There is some speculation that Hosssa could head to Montreal. Montreal has a lot of cap space with Smolinski and Ryder being UFA's. Hossa has played in Canada before and didn't mind the spotlight that followed playing in a canadian city. It is very plausible that he could end up in montreal. If the Habs don't get Hossa, they will likely add another big name this summer.
There are a lot of rumours that Hossa could end up in NY. Ny has cap space to sign him if they allow some of Avery, Jagr, Straka or Shanahan to walk. If they want to keep these players, they would probably have to part with either Drury or Gomez. This would not be the end of the world for them, seeing as they were signed as UFA's, and no players were traded in acquiring gomez and drury.
The Boston Bruins are also rumoured to be interested in Hossa. They have won the chuck Kobasew sweepstakes already, and are hoping to get a respectable winger to compliment the BC born superstar.
